ROMANTIC VERONA

We said our goodbyes to Tasha and Soren, who headed north to Torino, and Angela, Bob and I drove south-east to Verona. What a wonderful town, the old medieval centre of Verona was. We had a last minute booking.com update to a suite with balcony overlooking the town square. Bob and I could have spent the whole weekend in the room and jacuzzi tub. It was that inviting!
But oh my, we were off to "fare la spesa" because this is the best shopping town we've been to!

The Roman Amphitheatre in Verona

Bob gave us a history lesson on the Roman occupation of the area and we set off to see the amphitheater, which dates from the 1st century AD. After that we hit the wonderful pedestrian only streets to window shop. Of course, Verona is famous for Romeo and Juliet. The Capulet's home is preserved as a tourist stop and thousands flock here to see the famous balcony. There is a lovely statue of Juliet in the courtyard. Rubbing her breast is supposed to bring good luck, and no shortage of men were lined up to do just this.

Angela was a great driver, and it was nice to have a break from the wheel. Navigating though is another matter. I asked someone why Italians are so bad at giving directions. Anytime we stop to ask for directions we get a different variation from every person we ask. Our friend Alex told us this is because Italians don't want to tell you that they don't actually know the directions, so they give you their best guess. Signs are not much better. Case in point- take a look at this sign in old Verona. It took us an hour to find our hotel! You have a 50% chance of picking the right way!

Although we've bid Soren arrivederci, his style has had a big influence on Bob. Thanks for the fashion tips Soren. Bob will try to keep the look going.

The Soren wanna-be!
